Current Status

Millcreek Township incorporation will be on the November 2012 ballot. That means Millcreek Township residents will be able to vote on whether they want to be their own city, or remain as part of unincorporated Salt Lake County.

On June 6, 2012 the Salt Lake County Clerk's Office certified that the petition to place the issue on the November ballot met all the requirements as outlined in Utah State Law (Section 10-2-109, Utah Code).

Background

Salt Lake County received a petition to begin the incorporation feasibility study process for the Millcreek Township, including the communities of Canyon Rim, East Mill Creek, Millcreek, and Mt. Olympus. The feasibility study was meant to determine whether it is feasible for the Millcreek Township to be their own city.

The petition was certified on January 7, 2011 and set in motion an extensive process of public involvement to allow the landowners and voters in the Millcreek Township to determine the future of governance for their community.

Salt Lake County hired a consultant to perform the feasibility study. The selected consultant Lewis, Young, Robertson & Burningham, completed the feasibility study (9MB PDF) and presented it to the County Council. The study was voted on and approved by the County Council on June 7, 2011.

A public informational meeting was held on June 27, 2011, during which different groups presented information about the incorporation process and the study.Public hearings to present the study and gather feedback were July 19, 2011 and August 2, 2011.

After the completion of the feasibility study, another petition was required to continue the process. Per state law, supporters of Millcreek Township incorporation needed to acquire petition signatures of those in favor of placing the issue on the November 2012 ballot.
